Over the past decade, I have helped authors self-publish and orchestrate bestseller book launches on Amazon. I consistently see the same mistakes over and over again. Authors are often so focused on finishing their books that they are surprised when they need time to prepare and organize a successful book launch. I am sharing these mistakes so that you are ready to skyrocket your books off the Amazon charts and accomplish your dream of becoming a bestselling author.
Mistake #1: Not having a clear book launch plan before launching
With a clear plan of action, authors can take advantage of opportunities to help their book(s) succeed. Give yourself at least three months before your launch to map out the details. For example, include in your plan to start identifying a network of people (Book Ambassadors) to support and promote the book during the launch. Creating a simple book launch plan can make a world of difference in the success of your book on launch day!
Mistake #2: Not building an audience before your launch
Authors need to build an audience before launching their books. Build your email list by offering an opt-in on your website homepage at least 3-6 months before launching. Be generous and offer something truly beneficial for free in exchange for their email address. Offering helpful information builds trust and loyalty and will lead your prospective readers to want to learn more from you.
Mistake #3: Not leveraging other platforms
Authors should take advantage of different platforms to help spread the word about their book before the launch (and keep the momentum going after the launch). You should consider using social media platforms (pick the platform(s) where your readers spend their time. For example, if you’re writing a business book, focus on LinkedIn).
Also, consider Live Streaming on platforms with your book’s content before your launch. Showing up live is the fastest way for your audience to get to know (and love) you! If you’re an introvert or shy and the idea of live streaming on camera overwhelms you, watch my free StreamYard tutorial to help you get started. I share my screen and show you exactly what to do. StreamYard is my favorite tool because you can simultaneously simulcast to Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, and other platforms!
Other platforms are important, but remember that your email list is your most valuable asset. So, love the people on your list and take good care of them.
